Why this matters
GPS and other satellite navigation systems (GNSS) underpin defence operations, aviation, shipping, autonomous systems and the timing that keeps networks and power grids in sync. Their signals are also weak and easy to imitate. Spoofing, broadcasting false signals that trick a receiver into reporting the wrong position or time, is now a documented threat to Canada and its allies.
In this conversation, one of Canada's leading PNT researchers and SBQuantum's CTO discuss how navigation can be made harder to fool, and where quantum magnetometry, which senses the Earth's magnetic field and cannot be spoofed by radio signals, fits in.
What you'll learn
- What GPS/GNSS spoofing is, and why it matters to Canada and allied governments
- How Canadian research, government and industry are working toward more resilient positioning, navigation and timing (PNT)
- What quantum magnetometry is, and how magnetic navigation can back up or cross-check GPS
- What makes SBQuantum's diamond magnetometer different
- How close these technologies are to deployment: months, years or decades
Who should attend
- Defence and government PNT program managers and scientists
- Navigation, GNSS and avionics engineers
- Developers of autonomous, uncrewed and maritime systems
- Operators of critical infrastructure that depends on GNSS timing
- Researchers and investors following quantum sensing
Speakers
Dr. Susan Skone
Dr. Skone is a Fellow of the Institute of Navigation and co-leads the Space-Defence Technologies Alberta (SDTech AB) project, with current work for the Canadian Space Agency and the Department of National Defence. Her research uses GNSS to study the space environment and its effects on navigation. She served more than 25 years as an officer in the Royal Canadian Navy (Reserves).
David Roy-Guay
David founded SBQuantum as a spinoff of the Institut quantique at the Université de Sherbrooke, building on his PhD research in diamond-based quantum magnetometry. He led the team that took the technology from the optics lab to field-ready prototypes, and guided SBQuantum to the final stage of the MagQuest challenge to improve the World Magnetic Model.
Andrew Goldsmith
Andrew Goldsmith is the fractional CMO of SBQuantum. He has led marketing and business development for defence and security technology companies, including Rapiscan Systems. He is co-founder of Mooring Partners, which connects investors with national security and dual-use technology companies, and publishes the Dual Use Investor newsletter.

About SBQuantum
Founded in the quantum technology hub of Sherbrooke, Canada, SBQuantum builds quantum magnetometers and the interpretation and compensation algorithms that turn magnetic data into insight. Its sensor has been tested by the US National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency and launched into orbit, and the company works with the European Space Agency, the Canadian Armed Forces and others. Its miniaturized sensors will soon fly on unmanned vehicles and support uses that conventional sensors can't reach.
This webinar is co-hosted by ZeroDrift Technologies, SBQuantum's sister company in the United States.
